Steam rooms are becoming very popular for commercial applications such as spa, gyms and massage parlors. Steam saunas are also showing up in private homes. Some of these are inexpensive modular units. Some are elaborate custom installations.
Along with any steam room, whether commercial or residential, you will want to introduce eucalyptus oil into the steam or into the entire room. Most consumers associate steam or even dry saunas with the scent of eucalyptus, as it has been used for this purpose over several centuries that we know of.
One reason for using eucalyptus in a steam room is that without it, you are likely to experience unpleasant odors resulting from mold and mildew. The best solution for ridding these odors is Eucalyptus Oil. It is widely reported that essential plant oils including and/or especially eucalyptus oils have outstanding anti bacterial, anti microbial, and anti fungal properties.
According to a report from the Cornell University Department of Animal science:
The essential oil from the fruit, buds, and branches contain from 15-57% 1,8-cineole. Activities attributed (ed) to this compound include: anesthetic, antibronchitic, anticatarrh, antilaryngitic, antipharyngitic, antiseptic, antitussive, cns-stimulant, choleretic, counterirritant, dentifrice, expectorant, fungicide, hepatotonic, herbicide, hypotensive, pesticide, and sedative.
One such study concluded:
Conclusions: The eucalyptus extracts and three compounds from E. maculata were found to be effective against micro-organisms that cause food poisoning, acne and athlete’s foot. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study shows potential uses of extracts from E. globulus, E. maculata and E. viminalis, and antimicrobial compounds isolated from E. maculata.
The other reason for adding eucaluptus oil is for its therapeutic benefits. For centuries eucalyptus has been known to possess extraordinary health and healing capabilities. Aboriginal and Western societies alike have recognized that eucalyptus was one of a number of plants that had medicinal characteristics, including anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antibacterial, decongestant, deodorant, and other properties.
There are many ways to introduce Eucalyptus Oil into your steam room. Some use spray bottles or bowls with sponges. These systems are not very efficient either in results or cost. Another way is to use an automatic pump to inject the oil directly into the steam. An example of a pump that only uses pure oil for this purpose is the Mystifier injection system from Eurospa Chemicals. This system can be set to allow a specific amount of oil to be injected when the steam generator is on. This unit is inexpensive enough for home units, and is widely used by the finest hotels, spas, and gyms in the US for their steam rooms.
